Why is my japanese maple green all summer instead of red..also the leaf tips are burned and curled.?

One nursery lady said to water and water my japanese maple...they need lots of water to prevent leaf burning...she did not know why it stayed green all summer and not red....any answers!!!!!

Japanese maples are short, shade-dwelling trees and shrubs. The red color of thier leaves is caused by the red photosynthesis often preffered by shade-dwelling plants. You can see this phenomenon on regular maples when fall comes. The leaves change to red or yellow photosynthesis to compensate for the lower light levels, and thereby get a last gasp of usefulness before they die.

Overwatering will not solve the green problem, and will not do much for the burning problem. The healthiest place for your Japanese maple is one in which it is shaded from DIRECT sunlight for most of the day. If you can dig it up, move the bush to a shadier spot. Since you are just noticing the problem, I assume that you have either just moved in to a place with an already existing tree or bush, or you planted it within the last year. If you recently planted a small tree or it is a small bush, you may be able to transplant it. If it's been there awhile or is large, you'll have to cut it down and put one in a better place to get the desired effect of a red-leaved and healthy Japanese maple.

*Edit* I may not have made myself clear. Your Japanese maple is compensating for being placed in direct sunlight by using a photosynthesis (green) that converts heat energy efficiently at higher temperatures and also protects leaves better from higher UV concentrations.
