Ceremonial Drum
Is it culturally insensitive to hang and display northwest coast indigenous masks?
I have always loved the art created by Haida, Salish, ect artists. In particular, I love the intricately carved masks and have been considering purchasing a raven mask for my apartment. However, when I was younger I was taught that display some items like drums is frowned upon. Does this carry over to masks? I would not be purchasing something previously used in a ceremonial capacity (not used the feast or dances). Does this affect the taboo against display if there is one?
As long as they have not been used in ceremonies already,or made for that specific purpose,it should be just fine.
Usually masks that are made,and sold to the public,are for display purposes.
The artists that make them know,and understand,that people will be displaying them.
