Rope Djembe, Or Key Tuned Djembe?
what are the advantages and disadvantages, and how do u tune a rope djembe
The advantages of rope tuned or key tuned djembes really depend on your level of playing experience. Many people that have been playing a while and know their djembe can tune up a rope djembe quicker than a key/bolt tuned djembe. If you want a more traditional look then you're going to want to stay with a rope based djembe.
The best way to learn how to tune a rope djembe is to have someone show you. However, here is a quick breakdown:
To tune the head, place your drum on its side with the head facing away from you. Find the end of the rope handle, and untie it. Run the rope under the next two vertical ropes (V1 and V2). These are the ropes that run between the hoops. Then run the rope in the opposite direction, over V2 and back under V1. The rope should be coming out from the drum next to where you started. Pull any slack out and prepare to pull a diamond knot. Make a loop in the rope close to the shell. Fold a second loop through the first. Next, run a drumstick through the loop and pull the excess rope. You just tied a slip knot.
Place your feet or thights on the drum at either side of the knot or straddle the drum for support. Pull the stick towards you making sure to use only your arms and not your back. (Tip - By pulling the rope towards the bottom of the drum, you will avoid letting your row get too high.)
The two verticals will have crossed over and created a diamond. Continue this until the desired pitch is achieved. When you get to the end of a horizontal row, you will want to offset the same knot at the beginning of a new row by running the cord up at an angle and then under the next three vertical rows, then back one. When you are finished tuning, tie the excess rope off by running it under a couple of verticals.
