How does a snare drum sling work?

This is for marching band drummers, and music experts. I am trying to understand how the drum sticks out from the body, and does not move when hit or when marching, but is attached by a single hook hanging from a waist belt.

Umm, i am not sure about the sling, my sister uses the "hook" like things that go over your shoulder. These work better when marching and they don't fall apart nearly as much. Maybe this website can explain better than me
