Elastic Fit

How could you sew on elastic onto a dress with closed sides?

well im making a dress out of an undershirt thats kinda big on me so i want to put elsatic on it to make itt fit more, but the side are closed. so how do i sew it on??

It would actually be easier to take in the side seams than to put in the elastic. However, if you still want to do the elastic, here are a few ways:

1) Open the side seams, sew the elastic, resew the side seams.
2) Using bias tape, make a casing for the elastic. Insert elastic or drawstring.
3) Shirr the area with elastic thread ("mock smocking")
4) Sew the elastic on the outside of the garment, using it as a trim. Make a loop of elastic of the appropriate size, butting the cut edges together with a scrap of thin fabric underneath. Sew back and forth across the join either with something like a 3 step zigzag or plain zigzag. Sew the elastic loop to the garment's public side.
5) Same plan as 4, but to the inside.
