General Timpani
Where can I purchase a water drum?
My friends and I are starting a metal band, and out of the many bands we would like to cover, Mushroomhead is one of our most prominent picks. Mushroomhead uses water drums in their act, which are similar in appearance and size to timpanis or other large drums, but are filled with water. There is also water on the drum head, which makes a very cool effect when it is hit during the show. I searched the web myself, but couldn't find any good place to purchase new or used water drums. Does anybody know a good online music store where I can get any? And does anybody have any general advice pertaining to the instruments themselves or know any other drums that could make an adequate substitute for water drums?

I'm gonna give you some advice. Water drums are a terrible idea, for so many reasons. Especially for a new band.
1) You're going to be traveling a lot. Those are going to be a bitch to lug around. They probably won't even fit into a van, and you're going to have to rent a trailer, which costs money.
2) Bars and other small indoor venues (which all starting bands play at) rarely have a stage large enough to accommodate a 10 piece drum kit, much less those monsters.
3) Where are you going to get the water to fill them, from the sink? Or are you just going to leave them filled?
4) If you leave them filled, what happens when they leak in the trailer and ruin all of your equipment?
5) Speaking of ruining equipment, that splashing water has to go somewhere, and on a small stage, it's going on your amps.
6) Bars are small and dark. No one is going to see the effect, and they're going to be pissed when you get them wet. Especially if they don't know it's water.
7) Those things are loud. They are going to overpower any other instrument.
They don't even sound that good! Musshroomhead is the only band to use them for a reason. I know for a fact that they didn't even use them when they recorded the album. They would be impossible to mic, or even get them into the studio, for that matter. Plus, they don't add anything to the sound that can't be added using a bass drum.
9) When you play Rock am Ring, use them. Otherwise, stick with a drum kit.
I hope I've convinced you, without insulting you, but you have to know what a huge mistake it would be to walk into a rock club with those things and expect to get paid for the show.
