Is it safe to practice pointe in dance sneakers?

My parents do not want me to take up pointe for fear of the foot damage associated with the activity. I have a pair of dance sneakers with toe platforms, and I was wondering if it would cause any injuries or damage if I did basic pointe work in them. I have no real experience in pointe work, but I have a few instructional videos, and I am strong enough to go on pointe without any support. I have also taken ballet for a few years.

Thanks for all answers!

Thats not the best idea...It would be more damaging to practice in your jazz sneakers than in pointe shoes. You should probably tell your parents that. The Jazz sneakers will not support your whole foot while the pointe shoe will.

It seems that your parents have a misunderstanding of pointe work-its not that damaging unless you do it for hours and hours each week for years and years. A 60 minute class once a week won't do that much damage as long as you have the correct technique and under a ballet teachers instruction. There is lots of padding out there that will stop you from getting blisters.

I hope this helps :)
