What is a Good type of snare drum to buy?

I want to start playing the drums and I hear that snare drums are a good drum for beginners. Any suggestions. The most money I'm willing to spend on a drum is about $250-300 any suggesstions?
I already have knowledge in the music field from playing the clarinet for my 4th year and playing the guitar for a little while.
